NDMC 2001 Bus Q Shelter Design Competition - Together Let's Make Delhi

My Work Gets Stolen! Thief Is A Competitor.
2001 - Bus Q Shelter Design Competition by NDMC. Last Post This (..Almost..).
Refer the earlier Post at http://www.sandeepvij.blogspot.com/2019/05/line-of-sight-ndmc-bus-q-shelter-design-delhi.html . The following is trivia but useful information, for whatever it is worth. There was an entry from Bharat Constructions. In the Presentation Bharat Constructions had talked nonsense and they had put up a pornographic image in their model and one stupid Front Elevation. There were no dimensions. It was not an Architectural Drawing. It was a School Dropout doing some erotic exercises, and they presented it at NDMC Design Competition Presentation! They had no drawings and their person was talking general 'on the beach' entertainment stuff and I was wondering what actually is going on here. They were all on a picnic! Strange. He had put up a bikini clad young woman as the selling point on the front top panel, and I was wondering where is the Architecture, by the way, in his design. There was no design. I don't think that chap was an Architect. Niet, he wasn't. . . Mine was the fourth and last presentation. It went really well. I explained all as enumerated in the earlier three posts. Please do read them. All their questions were answered, all their points laid to rest and they were really very impressed and very happy. Yes, they were happy. My Client was also very happy (the person who had contacted me). :-) Now when we came out of the Presentation into the Foyer or Lobby or wherever these Bharat Constructions people were moving around me and were eyeing my sheets. I did not make much of it then. My sheets were with me of course. Some were rolled up, some were in a Roll Pack. I sat down for a while on a chair. These Bharat Construction people with their mature, hardened looks (touts and louts) and their sinister faces and rabid mental designs and their criminal intent (I did not make much of it - I couldn't fathom that they could even steal) sat next to me on both sides. There were more than four five fellas. I was actually contemplating what next once back at Home Office since I had been actively involved in only this over those last few days. I, after a while, just left my sheets on a chair and went to the washroom. And when I returned after 2-3 minutes, these people were all gone, ... and my sheets were gone. I was shocked. These people stole my drawings. They ran away with my Designs. I am 100% sure of this. I am sure that it was them. I want the entire country to note this. BHARAT CONSTRUCTIONS IS A THIEF. THEIR PEOPLE STOLE MY DESIGNS. I don't care if they go to court and ask me to prove it. There is a power of truth. And I shall win. Anyway, it is then that I realised that they were all stalking me because they needed my designs as reference. I also had a floppy diskette lying close to the sheets and that was gone too. And that is when I recalled that the NDMC Jury, after the Presentation, had asked the Bharat Constructions people to submit proper drawings. And Bharat Construction people were assuring them dubiously - 'yes sir, yes sir, we will submit the drawings, we will prepare the drawings, yes sir, yes sir'. So then I thought to myself, 'O My God, how can someone who is in an Architectural Competition, be so cheap? How can they be thieves? How can they do this?' So I am telling everybody in the world that India is full of thieves. ... India - the country of con people.

The person who had contacted me for the Design of this Bus Stand Design btw was someone I had met at this South Delhi Dance Club in South Delhi 1998 (he used to do Jazz, I had enrolled for Pop). Trivia. Interesting. Hainaa. Bolo Bolo? ;-)

During the Presentation I saw a person who was some Official from Progressive Constructions (a Sikh, a Sardar) for the first time. He was greeted by all the NDMC people. I don't know if he was the Owner of Progressive Constructions. I was a little surprised that this character has not met me at all in the last 2 weeks when I have been preparing the designs, drawings so hard, and for them. So that is not right for him to ignore me. Before and after the Presentation, he didn't make an effort to meet me at all. So then I felt a little bad. He did not even notice me, in a manner of speaking, during the Presentation also. Yes, that is true. He was pretending that I am not there even though everybody else was listening with rapt attention! So basically I was just hired. And they needed designs. And they needed dimensions also to be worked out. So it was a hidden game plan? That sounds far fetched I know. And I sound rather petty writing this perhaps. But then these people are thankless, and merit is not something they understand. So after the Presentation they all congratulated him and I was left high and dry. ... Congress Party. I was left wondering who he is, why has he not met me at all these past few days etc. My Contact Person, indeed yes, was gracious enough to accept that I worked hard and that he was happy. Yes, he lauded my work, my efforts and I write this because he actually sounded reasonable, except for the earlier little time wasting PR bit. I mean I should be fair, so I am saying that yes indeed this businessman was sincere. He said that he doesn't understand the design etc much but going from what everybody is saying my designs must be good, and from whatever little bit he understands he knows that I have worked very hard. And yes again he had called me later asking if I would be interested in supervising a few bus stands as per my design and how much I would charge for the same. I was actually not sure about the actual effort involved in the supervision (meaning what all they would ask me to do), and my elderly Structural Consultant also started to play some mind games (I contacted him after this call), and that is where a little lack of experience on my part showed itself! :-( So I called back. I said 5000 rupees per bus stand. This was year 2001. I was told 1 or 2 days later that "Sandeep ko to paanch hazaar koi nahin dene waalaa (nobody is gonna pay 5000 to Sandeep)". That told me that they were trying to sideline me already, after nabbing my designs. ... Congress Party.

The Conceptualisation, the Designing, working out, seeking a Structural Consultant, running to him in NCR and back at least twice (actually a 'further' contact of an Army Engineer, my Contact, acquaintance), getting his Structural Drawings, meeting Client more than twice, wasting my time with this Client who was 'also' interested in some PR, doing my own research (I went around for, amongst others, measuring the centre to centre of wheel to wheel of a normal DTC Bus plying in Delhi - and that was exactly 5 metres, by the way, I still remember that! - 2001, mind it, not the present day buses, whose c/c is, I reckon, around 6.5m), sourcing a Model Maker, explaining to him everything and finally getting the Model from him, preparing the drawings at my end was done in under two weeks flat. That is why the Model's photos are not with me. Though this should not be the reason, actually this was the reason. Oversight happened because of too much on my head. The Client of course took photographs, and later on they never handed me a Copy when I asked for it. I reminded them that that was my work. Negative. The Model Maker also took the photos. Perhaps, yes, I can contact him. Perhaps the Model is still with NDMC, intact. I don't know. The Structural Drawings had not been asked for by these NDMC people! I got them prepared still! It was not in the brief. But then, I, the Architect, was working. So those Drawings were an extra! It was purely my call to get in a Structural Consultant. My Client had some reservations on this. :-)

Trivia: And then I discovered that my Civil Engineer Contact seemed to know the owner of Progressive Constructions!, that Sardar. Coincidence! They almost hugged at the start of the Presentation as if two comrades have met after many years! Anyway, ...

So dilliwaalon!, this is not about getting famous or try to get into limelight, but a little order is in order. :-) That's it. And I make a friendly appeal to all people of Delhi that my Design should be replicated in at least 2-3 places in each District of Delhi, exactly as I designed (as much possible). I wish to demonstrate something. I wish to explain about an orderly, organised, smart, evolved society. I wish to "give" you something to be proud of. "Yeh hamaare liye hai" something. 'Meri Dilli Meri Jaan' kehte ho?

Hmm, .. so there .. . My no. is 0 9716082650. You can make contact. It is monitored? I don't know. But yes, my nos. were being monitored earlier. I can't be sure whether 'they' are still doing it. And who is 'they'? I wish I knew. But yes they were being monitored. So you can take a risk and call!? Jigraa Hai To Aa Jaa Jaaneman! Let's do some swashbuckling 'Living Daylights' activity around town. I am serious about this. You are young, you are a male, female, any religion, any political affiliation. You may or may not be nimble footed, but you possess a spirit, a jazbaa, a khaandaaneepan, and you don't bother about your calls being intercepted by the sinister mafia. If we keep bothering about these trackers and restrain, constrain our lives, then what progress will we make? And then that is not the way to live. :-) But yes we should take precautions. Anyway, my no. is there. Make contact if ya feels like.

Line Of Sight - Bus Q Shelter Design NDMC Delhi

Ad Panels On Sides Should Be Placed Correctly
Right To Brag: I was the first one to propose that the ad panels should not be towards the right.
Presenting the Drawings of the NDMC Bus Q Shelter Design Competition Submission from 2001.
Refer the earlier Post at http://www.sandeepvij.blogspot.com/2018/05/ndmc-bus-q-shelter-design-competition-wings.html which is the second post in sequence. Link for the first post is given there. This (where you are reading) is the third post. This contains the Side Elevations.

If you are on the shelter and looking towards the road or facing the road, then the right side panel is towards the rear of that side, and the left panel is towards the front of the side. In India vehicles move towards the left. I had argued that the ad panels should be placed such that the vision is not obstructed – the vision of the bus from the passenger on the bus stand. Till that time the ad panels were placed towards the right also (and many amongst us Delhiites will recall that), and I often used to wonder as to how can the NDMC and the MCD and the DTC be such dunderheads. I myself had seen people get up from benches or move either side to catch a glimpse of the route no. of the approaching bus, and then rush forward in case their route no. bus had arrived, and all because the ad panel was in their line of vision or obstructing their vision. So I had wanted to do away with the right ad panel altogether. But I was cautioned from some quarters that there is an ad panel area to be achieved and the right ad panel cannot be done away because that was just not in the culture at that time. I argued that the remainder of the ad panels can compensate for the area, but then again there were limitations to the max. area of any ad panel also, and then that was getting exceeded at places. Therefore, I shifted the ad panel towards the rear of the side, the right side. Also it is rectangular vertically so that line of vision is obstructed least. Refer the Side Elevations. The Left ad panel is differently then towards the front of the side for creativity and interest, ... completion something. Bus is not coming from there. These side panels (each) are hung on a frame atop two 25MM Square MS Pipes that then go further up into the Roof Structure. So I was the first one to propose that the ad panels should not be towards the right.

I had provided a railing also on both the side peripheries for the reason that I wanted this Shelter to be protected, sacrosanct. This railing was in the form of a chain that was the same as the chain that you see along Rajpath and India Gate. My contention was that with the help of this Chain the entire New Delhi area or Lutyen's Delhi can be "bound", it can have an identity distinct of its own and a character distinctly its own. It would be an 'immediate connect'. During the presentation the jury told me about theft. As Architects we can call it 'public abuse'. Hmm. So I understand that completely and therefore sadly perhaps this Chain will be / should be done away with. (?) What do you think? Yes? .. No? .. The jury can still be out on this one! Perhaps in some areas where security is good this chain can be implemented. Look at the Side Elevations. Tell me, is this not a good idea? I think it is a fabulous idea. And then it looks good from the sides too and provides the Bus Q shelter with a sort of 'completion'. I have no grudges on the Jury's objection or apprehension on the implementation of this one though. And since the adpanels are not exactly in front of each other, the Chains are also not exactly in front of each other, btw. This has nothing to do with abuse, just mentioning. The two little poles or masts holding the Chain are 600MM tall.

You also see the Balcony Railing towards the Front. There is an adpanel on the Side Top too. If I recall correctly this Side Top one actually was an addition from my side, because that space was going blank. That area was not considered in calculations of course but was just proposed as an Option. This bit is trivia btw, but nevertheless..

The total height of the Bus Stand from the finished surface is 3657 MM , or a little above 3.6 Metres.

Any History about this Chain?, anyone?.., any clues? :-)
